Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saga University, offers 2 years Master course and 3 years Doctoral course to train high level qualified experts in civil engineering and architecture.
(1) Master course
We offer two master programs. One is mainly for Japanese students, which starts at the beginning of April each year, and most of the subjects are given in Japanese. Another is the Post-graduate Program for Global Advancement in Environmental and Energy Science (PPGA), which is for both foreign students and Japanese students. The students can join PPGA from April or October each year. All subjects of PPGA program are given in ENGLISH. The Graduate School will provide incitement financial supports for limited number of students in PPGA program, which is equivalent to entrance fee.
(b) Research Fields and staffs
The Saga Plain, a typical lowland area, reclaimed from the Ariake Sea in northern Kyushu, Japan, with a thick clayey soil (Ariake clay) deposit has many geotechnical problems such as land-subsidence and low bearing capacity etc. In this area, not only solutions for technological problems related to infrastructure construction and disaster prevention are required, but also the techniques for maintaining the geo-environmental conditions to facilitate social life are strongly requested. Saga University is located on this lowland which is a suitable and attractive place for soft ground research. Research activities on the behavior of soft Ariake clay are being conducted in cooperation with the related organizations.

Environment System Engineering
This field studies and educates mainly a field of water environment and water cycle by treating formulation of systems for their improvement, conservation, control and management and related problems. The field educates and studies, for example, hydrological and hydraulic fields such as precipitation, river flow, etc., fields of water environment management for lakes, reservoirs, rivers and enclosed bays and integrated water management for lowland, etc.

Structural Engineering and Mechanics
Two groups are providing their radical studies on structural analysis and structural material.
Structural analysis group: Prof. K.Ijima, and Prof. H.Obiya
The group develops computational programs to analyze many kinds of structures, 2-D&3-D frame structures, membrane structures, space structures and so on. The programs can make evident material and geometrical nonlinear phenomena of structures, without using commercial software.
Structural material group: Prof. K.Ishibashi, and Prof. Y.Ito
The group investigates about concrete structures and their material. Recent studies include the usage of solid waste such as melt-solidified slag from municipal waste and concrete sludge, the development of instruments for detecting concrete damage and deterioration, and the evaluation of structural performance of old stone girder and aged RC bridges.
Urban & Social System Management
In order to increase the quality of the urban facility and urban environment, social system is indispensably important for education, which is also called regional social meta-infrastructure. Social system aims the unification of city planning and management with environment aspects including space human activities and sustainable urban development, and provides some subjects such as urban and regional planning, urban and regional environment planning and area environment workshop etc.. Furthermore in the future our program plans to provide urban space information society system as sub major including GIS tool and space analysis.
International activities for Education and Research: From 2003 International Partnership Program have been established between department of civil engineering, Saga University and department of civil engineering and architecture , Zhejiang University in order to realize the good mutual education and research cooperation In this program seminar and collaborative workshop have been continuing every year.

Architectural Design and Environment Engineering
This field focuses on contemporary town and architecture from planning and design with the feedback into practice. The field educates and studies, for example, architectural design, planning of public and pedestrian space, design of architectural environment, and revitalization on traditional town and village. The planning and design had doing based on a practically program with help from administrative organization.
This field is also doing theoretical research on urban history, architectural history, method of planning and design.

Saga University will provide scholarship for limited number of students in SIPOP and the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saga University, will provide incitement financial supports for limited number of students in PPGA program, which is equivalent to tuition fee.
